Sequence of Tenses Worksheet

If you begin writing in the past tense, don’t change to the present. Fill in the blanks using appropriate verb forms. Note that the paragraph starts in the past tense and should remain in the past tense.

Once upon a time, there lived a crocodile in a river. He ——————— (be) very old and beginning to feel weak. The elderly crocodile ———————— (believe) that he ——————— (will) regain his strength if he ———————— (can) eat a monkey’s heart. Accordingly he ———————– (ask) his son to bring him one.

Once upon a time, there lived a crocodile in a river. He was very old and beginning to feel weak. The elderly crocodile believed that he would regain his strength if he could eat a monkey’s heart. Accordingly he asked his son to bring him one.

The young crocodile went in search of a monkey. Fortunately for him, he could find a monkey sitting on a tree that stood on the bank of the river. The crocodile made friends with the monkey and invited him to his house. The poor monkey did not realize that the crocodile was cheating him. So he accepted the invitation.
