Water is essential for life. It is not only essential for humans but also for plants and animals. We can not imagine life without this invaluable gift of nature. The direct personal uses of water are those that come to our mind when we talk about water. It is used for drinking, washing clothes, cooking food, bathing and irrigation of crops etc. Plants also use water to survive as they use water to make food during photosynthesis. Hence, water is extremely essential for humans, animals, and plants to survive.
But we, humans, waste a lot of water unnecessarily. We do not think that the quantity of drinking water is after all limited. 97% of all water is in the seas and ocean which is salty and undrinkable. Only 3% of water is freshwater there on earth and most of that even is locked up in ice caps and glaciers. One fifth lies deep underground and a little exists as water vapour in the atmosphere. Only 1% of water is in lakes and rivers and in the soil. This 1% sustains all life on earth.
We must be very careful not to waste water unnecessarily. We must learn to use it wisely and effectively. We can waste less and collect more. We sometimes throw away the stored water and get the new water the next day. We do not get leaking taps fixed immediately. We often let the water run while washing clothes and vessels. Thus, there are many steps we can take to reduce this waste. We can store water more effectively by not polluting and by recycling wastewater.
We can also conserve water by adopting better agricultural practices. For example, sprinkler irrigation provides water in a spray that gradually moistens the soil. AnotSuch techniques known as dry farming techniques, supply enough water to the roots without most of it being lost to deeper layers of soil through seepage or to the atmosphere through evaporation. The government must take steps to ensure the judicious use of water. It is said the Third World War will be fought on water.
