The author's grandfather was a great lover of animals. He had made a zoo at home in which he would keep animals and gave them a lot of care. In his zoo, one could see a tortoise, a pair of rabbits, a tame squirrel and pet goats. One day he saw a pretty monkey. The monkey was a pet animal of a tonga driver. The tonga driver used to keep the red monkey tied with the feeding trough but it looked extremely tragic there. When the grandfather saw the monkey, he was so fascinated that he purchased the monkey from the tonga driver for a total of five rupees.

“The Scarecrow” tells the story of a man who dismisses his old servant on suspicion of thieving. One day, when he is driving out of town his car runs out of petrol. Forced to wait, the man spies a scarecrow in a field. The scarecrow suddenly stirs to life. It is the old servant who says that he had never committed the crime.

The protagonist of this story, Rama Rao, inherited money and invested it in a gramophone company to become a Malgudi agent. His business went well for five years, and he earned a lot of money to live a decent and comfortable life with his wife and children. However, things are not turning as well as we always expect.

Dusk by Saki is an interesting short story which revolves around a deftly crafted plot. The story starts on a sceptical note with the musings of a man in an exceptionally critical attitude by the name of Norman Gortsby who is seated on a seat just as dusk had set. The reason behind Gortsby's present outlook is perhaps the fact that he is a man who has been unsuccessful in life.
