Lal Bahadur Shastri: India’s Great Leader and Patriot
The 11th of January is the anniversary of the passing of Lal Bahadur Shastri, one of India’s most beloved leaders and its second Prime Minister. Shastri, who was India’s prime minister from 1964 until his untimely death in 1966, is remembered for his leadership during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War, his slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” (Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer), and his role in India’s Green Revolution.
1904 saw the birth of Shastri in a small village in Uttar Pradesh. He studied at the Kashi Vidyapeeth in Varanasi despite coming from a humble background. Young and profoundly influenced by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, he became involved in the Indian independence movement. Due to his political activities, he was arrested multiple times and spent a total of nine years in prison for his participation in anti-colonial protests.
Shastri quickly rose through the ranks of the Congress Party and held a variety of government positions following India’s independence in 1947. Before becoming Prime Minister in 1964, he served as a cabinet minister in the governments of Jawaharlal Nehru and Gulzarilal Nanda. Nehru died in 1964.
The Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 was the most significant event that occurred during Shastri’s tenure as prime minister. In August 1965, Pakistan launched a surprise attack on India with the intention of annexing the disputed territory of Kashmir, which led to the outbreak of war. Shastri responded with determination and resolve to the attack, and his leadership during the war earned him widespread admiration and esteem. His famous slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” (Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer) became a national rallying cry and is still remembered as a symbol of his patriotism and love for his country.
India and Pakistan agreed to withdraw their armed forces to the positions they held prior to August 5, 1965, in accordance with a United Nations-mandated ceasefire on September 22, 1965. Despite the fact that the war ended in a stalemate, it was considered a victory for India due to the failure of Pakistan’s Operation Gibraltar, the UN Ceasefire, and Pakistan’s attempt to annex Kashmir.
Shastri is remembered not only for his leadership during the war, but also for his role in India’s Green Revolution. The Green Revolution was a programme designed to increase India’s agricultural productivity and food grain production. It was initiated during his time as prime minister and is largely credited with transforming India from a food-deficient to a food-surplus nation.
Shastri’s tenure as prime minister was cut short by his untimely death on January 11, 1966 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, despite his many accomplishments. He had travelled to Tashkent to discuss the post-war situation with Pakistani President Ayub Khan at a summit meeting. Even though there was no official explanation for the cause of death, a heart attack was suspected. His death was met with widespread shock and grief, and he is still regarded as a great leader and true patriot to this day.
Lal Bahadur Shastri was a leader who possessed both simplicity and unwavering commitment to his beliefs. His untimely demise was a great loss to the nation, as he was a man of the people. However, his legacy and contributions to the nation will never be forgotten. Today, as we observe the anniversary of his passing, let us pause to remember and honour one of India’s greatest leaders, and pledge to follow in his footsteps by working for the betterment of our nation and people.
Lal Bahadur Shastri was, in conclusion, a leader who exemplified the spirit of service and sacrifice. His leadership during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War and his contributions to India’s Green Revolution will be remembered as shining examples of what it means to be a leader forever.
