National Women’s Day
While the rest of the world celebrates International Women’s Day on March 8, we celebrate National Women’s Day on February 13 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu, widely known as “The Nightingale of India.” Mahatma Gandhi dubbed the political activist and poet ‘the Nightingale of India,’ or ‘Bharat Kokila,’ because of the colour, imagery, and lyrical beauty of her writing. She is well-known for her literary contributions all around the world. The nation is celebrating its 143rd birthday this year.
Sarojini Naidu was a pivotal figure in India’s movement for independence from British colonial domination. She was a powerful leader who travelled the entire country to raise awareness about social welfare, women’s emancipation, and other related issues, later creating the Women’s Indian Association.
She was an active participant in Mahatma Gandhi’s civil disobedience and Quit India movements. As a result, every February 13th is designated as National Women’s Day, honouring her as a pivotal player in India’s independence battle.
Sarojini Naidu became the first woman President of the Indian National Congress in 1925, and later the first woman governor of a state. She was named governor of the United Provinces, which is now known as Uttar Pradesh.
Sarojini Naidu was born in Hyderabad to a Bengali Brahmin family with ancestral ties in Bangladesh.
Her mother, poet Barada Sundari Devi Chattopadhyay, used to write poetry in Bengali. Naidu was the eldest of eight children.
She married Paidipati Govindarajulu Naidu, an Andhra Pradesh physician, after finishing her education. The couple is the parents of five children.
Sarojini Naidu died of a heart attack on March 2, 1949, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
National Women’s Day is a day set aside to honour women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. The day also serves as a rallying cry for greater gender equality.
National Women’s Day is a moment to reflect on progress made, to advocate for change, and to honour ordinary women who have played significant roles in the history of their countries and communities.
National Women’s Day advocates for women’s rights to make decisions in all aspects of their lives, equal pay, equitable sharing of unpaid care and domestic work, an end to all types of violence against women and girls, and healthcare services that meet their requirements.
