aphorism

An aphorism is a short, concise statement of a general truth, insight, or good advice.  It’s roughly synonymous with “a saying.” Aphorisms often use metaphors or creative imagery to get their point across.  For example, “A bad penny always turns up” is an aphorism for the fact that bad people or things are bound to turn up in life.
