Allusion

Allusion: a reference to something in literature, history, mythology, religious texts, etc., considered common knowledge.

The verb form of the noun โ€œallusionโ€ is โ€œallude, โ€œso you could state that a writer โ€œalludes toโ€ or โ€œmakes an allusion toโ€ something. For instance, โ€œChocolate cake is my Achilles heel.โ€ The allusion here is to โ€œAchillesโ€™ heel,โ€ or the Greek myth about the hero Achilles and how his heel was his one weakness. In this case,ย the speakerโ€™s โ€œweaknessโ€ is chocolate cake.
