Introduction:
An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb. It tells us more about how, when, where, or to what extent something happens.
Types of Adverbs:
- Adverbs of Manner: Describe how an action is performed.
- Example: He ran quickly.
- Adverbs of Time: Tell us when something happens.
- Example: She will arrive tomorrow.
- Adverbs of Place: Describe where an action happens.
- Example: They are waiting outside.
- Adverbs of Frequency: Tell us how often something happens.
- Example: I always brush my teeth before bed.
- Adverbs of Degree: Indicate to what extent something happens.
- Example: She is very happy.
Formation of Adverbs:
- Many adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives.
- Example: Quick → Quickly, Happy → Happily
- Note: Some adverbs don’t follow this rule (e.g., fast, well).
Position of Adverbs:
- Adverbs of Manner, Place, and Time: Usually come after the verb or the object.
- Example: She sings beautifully.
- Adverbs of Frequency: Usually come before the main verb but after the verb “to be.”
- Example: She always arrives on time.
- Adverbs of Degree: Usually come before the adjective, adverb, or verb they modify.
- Example: The food is too spicy.
