In his essay “On National Prejudices” (first published in the British Magazine in August 1760), Goldsmith argues that it is possible to love one’s own country “without hating the natives of other countries.” Goldsmith is not firmly entrenched in his views. He has an open mind or a free spirit, and he believes that he is a citizen of the world, not only of one particular race of people or nation. Everyone can look different, or even sound different, but we all belong to the same human race, something that will never change.
