The theme is the central message the author wants to convey to readers. In a drama, the theme is often alluded to in the title and at the beginning of the play. As the play progresses, the way characters respond to other characters, plot events, the setting, and the conflict can reveal the theme.
Authors may also userepeated details or symbols to allude to the theme. A symbol might be a prop, a color, or a sound that appears at different times in a play. For example, sunlight might be a symbol of hope in a play about characters struggling to overcome fear. When you try to identify the theme, think about what the main character wants to accomplish and how the characters do or do not change as the story progresses.
