Indeed, if Christy were born today, the result would not have been different. Christy 's mother struggled to get a diagnosis of Christy 's condition given the fact that he was classified by almost every doctor who treated and examined him as a very interesting but yet a hopeless case. Christy was later determined to be a 'mental defective' who was to be placed in an institution. Because of a lack of oxygen at birth, parts of his brain were damaged-but although physically impaired, his mind worked perfectly. Bridget insisted that he was not to be sent away. Later on, her daughter Anne said that Bridget “always knew there was something there; she saw that light in his eyes. And she brought out that brightness, that spark.”
